WOD 120202 http://www.crossfitasylum.com/blog.php?id=41205 The muscle up seems to have changed quite a bit in the last 2-3 years. What was once a gymnastic skill and feat of strength has become more of a "let's see how much swing I can generate". I am just as guilty as anyone, especially in the quest for faster and faster times. Watch these videos, two have the same (INCREDIBLE) athlete, Annie Sakamoto (one of the original Crossfitters) doing muscle ups. One is about as strict as they get and the other includes nearly getting the feet parallel to the head on the swing. At it's heart, the muscle up should be done with zero swing, check out the third video to see. Obviously as crossfitters we are trying to get more work done faster, and the kipping muscle up lets us get there, but when we train and practice, it's important to know what these movements are "supposed" to look like. At the end of the day, being able to knock out a strict muscle up or two will significantly help your kipping muscle ups. Unfortunately, this skill doesn't work in the other direction. Work the strictest movement you are capable of in practice!!! It will pay off on game day.

Girls get 1 point for each lady to go over 100lb on their clean and jerk, 3 points for each going over 135 and 5 points for 155+. Guys, 1 point for everyone over 200lbs, 3 for going over 245 and 5 for 265+. Let's see who comes out on top!

I just ordered the new Reebok oly shoe last week. I am a huge supporter of lifting shoes for even the novice lifter. As you can see from the video it makes a significant difference. At the level of most Crossfitters, I'm comfortable saying that BRAND of shoe makes pretty little difference and you can go with whatever looks cool. In the last few years everyone has jumped into the oly shoe game and there are some pretty sweet looking options.

The energy in the gym during Wednesday's workout was amazing! I can recall numerous times that the entire class erupted in cheers for folks hitting big lifts and setting new PR's. That's the awsome part of CrossFit and the community that develops within our group classes. That is also something that helps these workouts become more effective. The support and encouragement from friends is an excellent source of motivation.
It also helps to keep us accountable, especially on days that you don't really feel in the mood to show up. You get a call from a friend or you show up and see who else is there and all of a sudden you feel a surge of energy and are ready to tackle the workout! That group dynamic is important. Today is a running workout. There aren't many of us who look forward to these days, least of all myself. But I do it because i know it's something I need to improve upon. You might say to yourself, "Oh I'll do this at home on the weekend instead...", but how often does that happen? We are all here to help you get through the workout and finish and we will be right there to cheer you on every step of the way. Try to get that at the track next to your house! We don't post our workouts in an effort to let you cherry pick the ones you like and don't like, so if you're committed to coming on Thursday, check out the workout, dress yourself appropriately and get your mind right. Boise CrossFit will be starting strength specific classes on January 30th. Class schedule will be

Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 11am and 3:30pm.

Classes will cover various strength methods and programs. The goal being to maximize strength to aid our metcons and Olympic lifts.

WOD 120123 http://www.crossfitasylum.com/blog.php?id=40814 Today I got an awesome text message, it said:

"I bought jeans yesterday that are a size 2... When I started CrossFit is was a size 12!!! 10 sizes! that's priceless. I love C. :) "

Obviously this is the kind of stuff we love to hear as coaches. Personally, I see CrossFit as performance based but most of you work your asses off to do just that, work your asses off. The asthetics will almost certainly follow as long as you keep a healty diet (meaning no grains and no sugar) and show up and work hard. It's not just about a better Fran time and bigger deadliftt, sometimes you just want to look and feel better! That being said, we will have another nutrition seminar in the near future to answer questions and make sure you guys are on the correct path nutritionally. Until that time, start here
